When Self-Care Feels Overwhelming

therapy tea: when the things we “should” do feel like a lot 🍒

Social media is flooded with cutest self-care content. It may feel pleasant to watch, pressure-filled, or something in-between. Watching skincare videos 🧖🏾‍♀️, we think “okay, skincare!” Then, we see the steps - the many products 🫧 , the set-up, and the aesthetic 🎧.

We might not think about the editing, lighting, angles, apps, and all the things that go into making this cute video. We may think - “How do I even get started with this?” or “My life doesn’t look like this”. It’s easy to forget that this is content, which doesn’t always look like real life.

As a therapist, I categorize self-care doing things that feel good for us. Sometimes, it’s ordering take out or watching a comfort show, but what if that still feels like a lot to take on? What I often observe in working with my amazing clients is that we can often feel burnt out in the self-care process.

There’s something to being aware of basing how much we exert ourselves based on our capacity. This can be more simple than it sounds. It can be asking ourselves the questions - “What do I need right now?” “What do I have capacity for right now?”

Maybe it’s going to bed early, taking a longer shower, lighting a candle, wearing your cosiest pajamas, or taking a social media break. All of things are enough, and low-stimulating tasks can work wonders for our brain. Doing less is also self-care. Mantra of the month - “What if I’m already doing enough?”
